Merry Christmas and have a blessed New Year!

Merry Christmas to you as well, Jonny! And a Happy 2016!

  • From Mark on sunday morning

Not that I am anything close to an expert in exercise but do you stretch before and after your walks? That might help with the muscle cramps. Also are you drinking enough water? Also your magnesium might be low. I take a daily magnesium supplement and drink water all day long. I still get an occasional charley horse but only a few times a year And they don’t seem to be related to exercise as they happen in the evenings or during the night.

  • From jupiterj on sunday morning

Excellent idea about the stretches I will have to find some and do them. Elizabeth uses them as well I think. Did not know about the magnesium. Will have to check it out!

  • From Mark on sunday morning

Another thought about the magnesium… I actually started taking it because my urologist said it would help stave off kidney stones. That and drinking a glass of Orange Juice every day… FWIW…

  • From Sarah on sunday morning

…when I got lots of leg cramps in the past, I read something that said it was down to lack of potassium – so I ate lots of bananas. I don’t get them very often anymore.

    hope it’s feeling better!

Thank you, Sarah and Mark! I think the stretches are helping, but I’m planning on checking out how expensive magnesium is and giving that a try as well.

      • From Mark on sunday morning

I get my magnesium through Amazon. $18 for a 3 pack of 200 tablets each (600 tablets). I take one a day. 250 mg. So that’s about $10 / year.

  • From Rhonda on moving to a different place in my being

Looks like some good music – let me know how you like it!
And, we need to schedule another “lesson” sometime soon.

    • From jupiterj on moving to a different place in my being

I played through “The Revd Mustard, His Installation Prelude” by Muhly yesterday. I am using my tabled as a music reader for these pieces where the hands never or hardly ever lift. I can set it at a slow scroll and it works pretty well. This piece is charming and I want to learn it. Would love to meet up soon.

  • From Mark on quick blog so I can cook

Thanks for posting the clarinet piece. I always liked it…

  • From jupiterj on quick blog so I can cook

    It’s you on piano, right?

  • From Mark on a little jenkins history

    Hi…

It was fun to hear Dad’s voice so clearly on the recording. Please hang on to the Mp3’s for me and I’ll get copies the next time I’m over. I can only download the files by digging through the html of your webpage to find the direct link. Otherwise, it just shows up as a media player that has no option for downloading that I can see. There’s no rush as I can listen to them online so if you can just keep them all in a local subdirectory, I’ll bring a USB stick and copy them sometime.

Thanks for taking the time to make these recordings.

    • From jupiterj on a little jenkins history

You are welcome! I’m sorry you can’t capture the mp3s easily. It’s probably because I’ve taken to simply uploading them via the insert media option. I used to upload them to a url where they are easier to capture. I will try to do that. Plus of course I will make everything available to anyone who is interested. I just emailed everyone a copy of the mp3.

      • From Mark on a little jenkins history

I haven’t received any emails from you… Just so you know. As I said, I can always get it when I’m visiting…

        • From jupiterj on a little jenkins history

Yikes. Somehow I think I had an old email address or something for you on my Jenkins email list. Anyway, I reemailed it to you and merged all your contact addresses in my Gmail contacts. Sheesh. Sorry about that.

  • From Elizabeth on a little jenkins history

OMG. These recordings are awesome. I’ve heard him tell these stories, but lots more details… Thanks for sharing them! Love you!

    • From jupiterj on a little jenkins history

Thanks for checking it out… I love you, too!

  • From Rhonda on jupe is not all there, and is all the more himself since he is not so

Hey, guess how that “hope college prof” got your name…
    🙂

    • From jupiterj on jupe is not all there, and is all the more himself since he is not so

Many thanks! It had occurred to me that you were in on it, since I don’t often get asked over there. I haven’t heard from her again. Maybe she’s had second thoughts. 🙂

  • From Mark on thinking about church music and listening to a tape of my grandparents

I was able to download the file that you posted. Thanks…

Strange how much Dad and his dad’s voices are similar. Clearly different but similar. I sort of think that the difference is more one of training (or lack thereof) than of sound. Or perhaps it’s just stylistic.

This stuff is great! Keep it coming. And thanks!

    • From jupiterj on thinking about church music and listening to a tape of my grandparents

Excellent! I think I will both embed and link in the future. That way if a reader wants to hear a recording they can click on it. If it doesn’t work or they want to download it, they can go to the link.

  • From Mark on More Jenkins stuff

Links are still working. Thanks. Great recording…

  • From Mark on jupe adventure with the social security on behalf of mom

Again… Thanks for digitizing these. I remember these songs very well. And the southern accent seems so right. Almost like listening to Alan Lomax recordings.

    • From jupiterj on jupe adventure with the social security on behalf of mom

I have the same response about Lomax.

  • From Sarah on jupe continues to wallow in the past

    G.T. = Gospel Trumpet? No?

    • From jupiterj on jupe continues to wallow in the past

I talked with Mom yesterday. I had already come to the conclusion you have (post blogging) that G.T. was Gospel Trumpet. Mom confirmed that she had worked there for a while after she married Dad. She also said that she was unmarried in this photograph. Dad begins attending college in 1948. He meets Mom in his second semester. He says in his memoirs that she is a sophomore. She worked in the college library, he says. By the end of the year I had a date with her. He didn’t make a “good impression, but Mary was a challenge.”

My memory of the family story on this is that Dad through a temper tantrum over a ping pong game at their first date. Mom promises herself not to go out with him again. Dad persists. Finally Mary agrees that when the Anderson Quartet in which Dad sang visits her home town, South Charleston, she will go out with him then and there.

The next mention I see in Dad’s memoirs is his description of proposing to Mom in 1949.

  • From Elizabeth on jupe is ill

Ugh. Sorry you are ill. I love you.

Careful. I think if you google it, you’ll see that “illegals” is a pretty hurtful term.

    • From jupiterj on jupe is ill

Sorry. I certainly didn’t mean to be hurtful when linking in a story about children killing themselves!

  • From terry bird on my funeral

I love to play the piano at funerals, weddings, graduations, at cancer centers, nursing homes; anywhere I have a captured audience who are very appreciative. I my self have cancer, so I sneak in and play and the hospital where I receive treatment. They love it. I play mostly Chopin and a Japanese composer, Sakamoto, who wrote Forbidden Colors. I love that piece. People who hear it once always want to hear it again. I will soon die, but until . . . I will play the piano.

  • From Mark on the arbus factor of old age

I don’t disagree with your observation that Facebook is moving away from the world of ideas. That said, it’s my understanding that it’s called Facebook in a sort of reference to college yearbooks. If that’s true, the sort of mundane writing that goes into Facebook is pretty much on the same level as that which goes into a yearbook. FWIW.

    • From jupiterj on the arbus factor of old age

This makes sense. I find it interesting that when moving from a “yearbook” to a “facebook” the notion of “book” as a physical object is lost. And the idea of a recurring book that captures an instant in schooling is replace with the very idea of image: “face.'”

  • From Elizabeth on some music stuff

Great news about the computer! Also, previous post made me cry. Sigh. I love you.

    • From jupiterj on some music stuff

Yes, my boss is a good un. I asked her if I could keep the computer. She said yes but asked me if I was planning on working a few more years for Grace. I told her I was and that seemed to clinch that. So I get to keep it. Also, I didn’t mean to evoke your tears, just random memories of my Dad.

  • From Elizabeth on jupe blathers on

    I think he turned 16!

    • From jupiterj on jupe blathers on

16, 16, you’re right! I knew it, but I think I thought the year we are in was 2015. Embarrassing.
