Hmm, I know of a great local venue (the 40th birthday party of a local musician…) where you guys could play some Bach. Just saying.

  • From jupiterj on live music

You are absolutely right! Will ask Amy if she’s up for it. Sept 14th, right?

  • From David on just for giggles

Ever see that movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Everytime you blog about Greek I here it narrated by the Dad in that movie…..is that weird?

  • From jupiterj on just for giggles

I have seen that movie, but I don’t remember the Dad offhand. Funny how that works sometimes. (just googled it and now I do remember the actor).

  • From Mark on work day and still swimming in the popular culture

I read in a bio of Anthony Burgess that, when married to his first wife, they had a standing order for a case of gin to be delivered to their house once a week. I wonder what the CDC might say about that level of consumption…

    🙂

    • From jupiterj on work day and still swimming in the popular culture

I remember Burgess ruminating about his naivete about her drinking in the autobiography. It was obvious that he had since figured out it was at least part of what killed her. Can’t remember her cause of death.

Was any of the books you were looking for “The Catholic Study Bible” or “the American Catholic”? You gave these to me but I could send them back if you wish.

Thank you, David. But the books I was thinking of are specifically concerning liturgical scholarship, not those two. Furthermore since moving most of the books upstairs and stacking them out of order, I can no longer go check where the books should be until I put them back in some kind of order. Hence, the books are probably here. I just can’t find them.

  • From Mark on whippy skippy

I looked at the Washington Post subscription offer. It was $29 for mobile device access. I decided that, while it’s an excellent price, I don’t usually manage to read much of the NYT already and didn’t want to add something else.

  • From Mark on happy monday

When I studied Greek, writing declensions over and over and over was the only way I could memorize them. I never found going over them mentally to be very helpful. I suspect that if I had spoken them aloud that would have been effective but I never did that. Or at least I seldom did that.

If I were going to try to renew my Greek, I would do a lot of writing again. That’s part of why I don’t try to renew it. I find that handwriting aggravates my carpal tunnel syndrome and so I tend to use a keyboard. I think I probably hold the pencil or pen too tightly.

But, like I said, writing was always the most effective tool for memorizing. And that was true in all subjects for that matter.

  • From jupiterj on happy monday

Very helpful for you to point this out. I have used the writing method in studying before but not so much with language learning. This is probably because all my formal training has been in spoken languages (French, German). In that case, it’s helpful to be able to recall the correct word form aurally.

For some reason I didn’t know about your carpal tunnel syndrome. Yikes.

  • From Mark on happy monday

Yep. I have had carpal tunnel for many years. It’s weight related I am sure. It’s why I gave up learning Classical guitar… Took lessons at the same place as Ben when he was young and was doing pretty well. Had to stop though because of the dang hands. Doesn’t seem to bother me much at the piano… Or computer. Sometimes while driving for long distances… I talked with a specialist about surgery but decided against it.

    Ah well…

  • From jupiterj on happy monday

Bah. I talked to Eileen and she also didn’t remember that you had this problem. Dang. I remember you and Ben studying guitar. I remember you treating Eileen and me to a nice meal after I accompanied you for a purchase of one in order to do so. I’m glad you can still play piano and do computer.

  • From Sarah on switched results

I can help you with a VPN too – I paid for a month’s worth for my trip, already set it up on my devices ready to go, and Mark sent me details for a free one too. I’m sure we can set you up. X

  • From jupiterj on switched results

Cool. Thank you. I’m just being lazy about learning and doing something I haven’t done before…. I have that email as well. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

  • From Sarah on sideways score and strengths and a p.s.

I think this was a test to see if anyone was listening. You repeated a sentence in your p.s. 😉

Actually, as I’m commenting, I was a bit confused about your paragraph explaining your exam results… Did you pass?

Miss you! Hope it’s not too quiet without mom there. X x

  • From jupiterj on sideways score and strengths and a p.s.

I was having problems with the preformatted option and I didn’t notice that when I finally published there was a repeated sentence. Not a test : /

I didn’t pass the exam. I had passing scores once but there is a rule that one cannot fail even the smallest section of the exam which I did.

I am missing Eileen that’ s for sure. But I am surviving.

  • From Cindy Cosway on jupe alone but lucky in helland

It’s a fabulous thing that you and Eileen have each other. Makes me smile! 🙂 I’m sure she is enjoying her time with the new granddaughter, but will be overjoyed to be home with you. Y’all are great, but even better together.

  • From jupiterj on jupe alone but lucky in helland

“Even better together,” I like that. Thank you, niece! I’m pretty sure you and Mike have a pretty fabulous thing as well. Best wishes and love from your uncle!

  • From David on I hate people and St. Anne

I recognize one of the images you put up. Stone Temple Pilots Tiny Music From the Vatican Giftshop CD cover. That’s a good CD and I started listening to it on the bus ride home since I saw it on your post…
    David =^)

    • From jupiterj on I hate people and St. Anne

Cool. I did know that it was an album cover. I used it because of the way the cover seem to illustrate how small an amount of actual music comes into play with what draws so many people in popular music.

  • From Mark on jupe the overfunctioning black sheep

Is the recommendation about sealing the cinderblock walls going to change their appearance? I understand the acoustic concern about them but have always thought that the unpainted cinderblock was kind of cool. Gave the feel of stone…

    • From jupiterj on jupe the overfunctioning black sheep

Depending upon how many coats it takes, Dawn Schuette said that it might change the color a shade but not the appearance. We also need better lighting. So if we up the light a bit, this might even offset any change in color. However, this is still moot as we haven’t an idea of how much this might cost. Cost could easily be prohibitive.
