    Doh! Ah well.

  • From David on time alone

Just found out yesterday that my childhood friend Jimmy Pastor passed away a few years ago. Kinda weird. He and I visited one summer in my early teens. Not sure if you remember.

I do remember Jim. How did he die? I remember that visit.

  • From David on a no thank you helping of a vacation blog post

    Thats too funny…..everyone is technologized….at the cabin…..away from civilization….

  • From Rhonda on a no thank you helping of a vacation blog post

Love that last picture. I want one of those…
Forgot to tell you, I was in a couple really cool bookstores in Vermont and Kalamazoo, and in one of them I picked up a NYT collection of short stories by young authors and read one by that Nigerian woman you’ve been raving about, and totally loved it. Do you own a book of hers, or just got it from the library? I need to find some more!
    See you soon.

David, I was pretty pleased that we could access the internet in the Grayling cabin. I resisted firing up the laptop until this blog entry. I also like the air conditioning. There’s no denying I like my creature comforts.

Rhonda, so far I have only read library copies of Adichie. Herrick owns a few. I plan to read all of her work at this point, somehow.

  • From Sarah on talking like a civics class

My civics class was taught by the football coach. The only thing i remember about it was failing at an excercise where we wrote the preamble on the chalkboard from memory.

  • From jupiterj on talking like a civics class

That sounds about right. Hey. At least you had a civics class. Hope things are going well in the U.K. love from Dad

  • From David on just another day

So i was reading your daily journal and had a “wait….what?” moment. The drops are for your ears but go in your nose correct? Just checking.
    David

  • From jupiterj on just another day

This is correct. They contain a drug (Fluticasone) which my Ear, Nose, and Throat guy recommended. I understand that it helps the nasal passages stay moist and thereby reduces the number of ear infections. I have had a number of these. When they occur the main symptom is that my inner ear seems stuffed up and I can’t hear well. These drops seem to help.

By the way, thanks for reading!

Wow, it’s such a transformation. Very exciting.

    • From jupiterj on more sneaky collegiality and renovation update

It is exciting. Eileen is having fun picking out things. Yesterday she ordered a cupboard thing to go in the room.

I’m glad you read this post. You, Sarah and David and possibly other family members are who I have in mind when I put the pics up.

  • From Mark on feeling overwhelmed, parry, Saint-Saëns

Couldn’t you work it out with Jen and the treasurer just to have the parish pay you for extra services like weddings and funerals and then let them handle tracking down the money?

It seems like part of the reason clergy are so bad at looking out for musicians in these type things is that they are usually not getting paid for them and thus don’t think of the money so quickly. I don’t get paid for weddings (the couple is encouraged to make a donation to the Discretionary Fund but I receive nothing). So I don’t always think about $$$ at the rehearsal or the wedding. And whenever people mention money, I always send them to the administrator.

If this was handled by the treasurer and administrator that would seem like a good solution. You would just fill out a check request andhave Jen sign off on it. And it could then be part of your W2 (or 1099) and you wouldn’t have to track it separately. Of course, that means getting them to agree to do it.

    FWIW

Good tip from uncle Mark. Just thought i would provide a couple of links to some articles that i am indirectly involved with. My boss is more directly involved. Just want to preface the articles by stating…”IT’S NOT MY FAULT!!!!!!!” =^o

Excellent ideas, Mark. However we do not have an official administrator. The bookkeeper is part-time and check requests usually are not that fast (sometimes but often not…. this depends upon the treasurer coming to sign them), But maybe Jen and I could work something out along these lines. I’ll certainly bring it up to her.

David, thanks for the links. I have them opened in a window to read later.

And thanks to both of you for reading my blog!

  • From Mark on bathroom and books

    Lovely pics!

    • From jupiterj on bathroom and books

Thank you. I admit to feeling silly putting up pictures of my bathroom, but it is a great relief to have this working. We haven’t tried the washer and dryer yet. Chris the worker returned this morning to mess with some details. Eileen and I think he might be getting pressured by Chuck the contractor. We will see Chuck at the Hatch Family reunion today. He seemed to want to have our renovation done by them so we weren’t complaining to the fam. Heh.

  • From David on bathroom and books

The job looks good. I was impressed by the fact that they put a lip around the bottoms of the rooms so that if there is leaking or water it wont effect the walls. I didnt see a drain though and hope they floated the floor at a slight angle. Im glad it seems well done. It makes life a little easier when things are working and in good repair…at least for me anyways. =^)
    David

  • From jupiterj on bathroom and books

There is no drain and I’m not sure they floated the floor at an angle, but we are very happy to have gotten this far in the renovation, for sure!

  • From Elizabeth on people can listen or just move on

    Hi Dad,

Just wanted to let you know I’m reading your blog. I love you. I just finished reading an Ibsen play: “An Enemy of the People”… I think I probably mentioned it to you when I first ran into it. Anyway, I finished it. It’s very didactic, but resonates with the work at Greenpeace and living in China. Arthur Miller did an adaptation, changing the ending, but I haven’t got my hands on it yet.

    Love,
    Elizabeth
